An accurate analytical method for the identification and quantitation of 1,2-propylene glycol in packaged and in-process beer is described. The concentration of 1, 2-propylene glycol in beer was determined using a simple methanol solvent extraction, using ethylene glycol as an added internal standard, with detection by capillary gas chromatography. Chromatographic separation of 1,2-propylene glycol was successfully achieved using a Restek 30 meter, 0.53 mm ID, 1 µm df Stabilwax (Crossbond Carbowax polyethylene glycol) column with detection by flame ionization using a Thermo Fisher Trace 1300 instrument.
Laura Marques received a B.S. degree in chemistry from the University of Western Ontario and diploma in Science Laboratory Technology from Fanshawe College in London, ON, Canada. She began employment at Diagnostix Inc. in 2001 as an R&D chemist working on an effective mycotoxin regimen used in the national grain inspection industry. Since November 2006, she has worked for Molson Coors Canada in the role of chemist at the central laboratory. Laura is also a member of the MBAA and in addition to serving on two ASBC subcommittees has previously given presentations on flavor stability and EPR.
